Magswitch Magnetic Tooling in High Heat Applications
Magswitch Magnetic Tooling in High Heat Applications
Magswitch tools and magnetic grippers can be used in almost any ferromagnetic application, but most people need to be made aware of a temperature limit. This article explores those limits and how Magswitch can solve applications and processes using high-heat parts.
Magnets have a Curie temperature (TC), or Curie point, which is the temperature above which certain materials lose their permanent magnetic properties. The Curie point is named after Pierre Curie, who showed that magnetism was lost at a critical temperature.
Standard Magswitch tools are rated for a constant 80°C or 176°F, and we offer options for up to 200°C or 392°F at a 100% duty cycle. It is possible to run to a higher temperature for a very low-duty cycle process, but you should consult our Applications team to determine its feasibility.
Magswitch has in-house expertise in dealing with these harsh environments. It uses combinations of unique magnet recipes, heat-resistant housings, and thermal barrier coatings on the pole shoes to resist heat transfer.
Hot Forming/Hot Stamping
Hot forming and hot stamping processes can be performed faster and more efficiently using Magswitch products than traditional grippers, and they are more robust than suction cups in this abusive application. Some of the key benefits of using Magswitch high-heat magnetic grippers are:
- No need for a Part Ejector
- Reduced downtime
- Faster actuation
- Reduced air consumption
- Better shear performance
MIG Welding
Arc and MIG Welding processes can transfer heat through the part to the landing zone of the magnet tool or magnetic gripper. The Magswitch line of extended heat and high heat tools can be employed in these applications.
Please refer to our blog post about Residual Magnetism, where we also discuss some of the other considerations when using magnets, such as Arc blow and stray magnetic flux, and how Magswitch can offer solutions.
In the Automation space, we offer high-heat magnetic grippers not only for part handling but also to securely mount COBOT welding arms on a MagBase for use in:
- Mining and construction vehicle manufacturing
- Shipbuilding
- OTR Truck weld assembly
- Oil and gas
If your process involves a welding duty cycle or the use of a pre-heat torch, then the high-heat version of Magswitch tools is a great option.
Magswitch Finite Element Analysis (MFEA)
Magswitch Finite Element Analysis (MFEA) is a service that Magswitch Application Engineers offers our customers. MFEA can be used to predict the amount of magnetic flux that the part will see. This is based on magnet size, part mass, thickness, material grade, and proximity to the weld area. Generally, under 20 Gauss is "safe" and shouldn't affect the weld.
The Magswitch FEA allows you to correctly place magnet tools and magnetic grippers without affecting the welding process.
Magswitch High Heat Tool Options
The maximum temperature rating of these magnets describes the maximum sustained operating temperature the magnets can withstand before permanent magnet degradation. A minimal duty cycle can achieve temperatures higher than the maximum sustained operating temperature.
Magnet Description | Maximum Sustained Operating Temperature |
Standard Magnet | 80°C |
"UH" Magnet | 180°C |
"EH" Magnet | 200°C |
"AH" Magnet | 220°C |
